Science has long extolled the virtues of coffee. But the latest study on the medical benefits of your morning joe confirms that coffee is basically the superhero of beverages. Even decaf coffee can literally save your life, suggesting that it’s not just caffeine but the actual beans conferring long life and prosperity. Your move, green tea.

The study, reported in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, showed that people who regularly drank moderate amounts of coffee daily were less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, type 2 diabetes, and suicide. “Moderate” consumption was classed as five cups or fewer per day.

“The main message is that regular consumption, meaning three to five cups of coffee a day, is associated with lower risk in total mortality and mortality from several causes like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and suicide,” Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology who helped lead the study, told NBC News. “In previous studies on that issue, most of the coffee was caffeinated coffee. In our study, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee showed a lower mortality risk, but there is no final conclusion yet.”

Hu and his team examined the coffee-drinking habits of around 170,000 women and 40,000 men from three separate previous studies to draw their conclusions. The participants had their coffee habits assessed every four years and their health assessed for up to 30 years. During the follow-up period, 19,524 women and 12,432 men died from various causes. The link between coffee and long life was even more clear when researchers repeated their analysis on only the nonsmokers. People who drink coffee are also more likely to smoke and drink alcohol, and pretty much the only thing this super-drink won’t do is cancel out lung cancer.

“The main message is that people who enjoy drinking coffee should not worry about it being harmful for their health,” Hayes told NBC News. “Coffee may actually be beneficial to their health.”

Of course, even superheroes need sidekicks. Check out these 10 essential items for coffee aficionados and start brewing your way to immortality.
